What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a specialized surgical and medical subspecialty dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of all disorders affecting the eyes and visual system. At Tulip Hospital, our Ophthalmology department provides complete eye healthcare under one roof — from routine eye exams to complex retinal and corneal surgeries.

An ophthalmologist is a fully qualified physician who has undergone subspecialty training in both the medical and surgical aspects of eye care. Our team is equipped to handle conditions ranging from common refractive errors to life-altering diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.

Patient FAQs (Common Questions)

How often should I get my eyes checked?
Adults with no eye problems should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years. If you have diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of glaucoma, annual exams are strongly recommended. Children should have their first eye exam before starting school.
Is cataract surgery safe? How long is recovery?
Modern phacoemulsification (phaco) cataract surgery is extremely safe with a very high success rate. The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes. Most patients notice improved vision within 24–48 hours, with full recovery in 2–4 weeks.
Can diabetic eye disease be prevented?
While you may not be able to completely prevent diabetic retinopathy, you can significantly reduce the risk by controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Annual dilated eye exams are essential for early detection and treatment.
What are warning signs that I need an urgent eye consultation?
Seek immediate care for: sudden vision loss, seeing flashes or floaters, curtain-like shadow in your vision, severe eye pain, eye injury, or sudden redness with vision change. These can indicate serious conditions requiring urgent treatment.
Do you treat children for eye problems?
Yes. Our ophthalmology team has experience in pediatric eye care including lazy eye (amblyopia), squint (strabismus), childhood refractive errors, congenital cataracts, and retinopathy of prematurity in newborns.
