Patient FAQs

Is anesthesia safe?
Yes, modern anesthesia is exceptionally safe. At Tulip Hospital, our anesthesiologists use highly advanced monitoring equipment and rigorously adhere to international safety protocols to continuously track your vital signs and adjust medications throughout your entire procedure.
What is the difference between general and regional anesthesia?
General anesthesia affects your entire brain and body, meaning you will be completely unconscious and unaware during the surgery. Regional anesthesia (like an epidural or spinal block) only numbs a specific part of your body (such as from the waist down), allowing you to remain awake and breathing on your own, often with some light sedation to keep you relaxed.
Why am I told not to eat or drink before surgery?
Fasting is a critical safety measure. Under general anesthesia, your body's normal reflexes are relaxed. If there is food or liquid in your stomach, there is a risk it could travel up into your throat and enter your lungs (aspiration), which can cause life-threatening complications.
Will I feel nauseous or sick when I wake up?
Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) can happen to some patients depending on their medical history and the type of surgery. However, our anesthesiologists proactively administer highly effective anti-nausea medications during and after your surgery to minimize or completely prevent this discomfort.
Do anesthesiologists only work in the operating room?
No. While their primary role is in the operation theater, our anesthesiologists are also critical care experts. They play a vital role in managing patients on ventilators in the ICU, providing epidurals in the maternity ward, and treating chronic pain conditions in our specialized pain clinic.
